It’s been 75 years since Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, then known as the Currumbin Bird Sanctuary, first opened to the public.
Located on the ground of the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is the Currumbin Wildlife Hospital, one of the busiest wildlife hospitals in the world. A lot has changed in 75 years, but together the Sanctuary and Hospital continue to work towards a common goal, to save Australian Wildlife, through World leading conservation programs and animal care.
In 2021 I spent three months volunteering in the Animal Hospital. During my time I mostly worked with sick and injured Koalas as well as a wide variety of native birds.
My day-to-day duties included-
- Cleaning and sterilising the enclosures
- Recycling out old branches and leaves
- Creating natural environments within the enclosures
- Preparing and delivering meals to the enclosures.
- Helping the medical staff administer medication
